Beyond Loud and Soft: Rethinking Dynamics as Three-Dimensional Expression

Abstract: This article reframes musical dynamics as expressive tools rather than simple indicators of loud and soft. By encouraging students and ensembles to interpret piano and forte through character, emotion, and intent—and involving them in those decisions from an early stage—it promotes deeper musical understanding, stronger ensemble unity, and more meaningful performance.

A Player's Perspective on Yamaha's YEP-842ST and YEP843ST Euphoniums

Abstract: This article presents a side-by-side comparison of the Yamaha YEP-842ST and YEP-843ST euphoniums, based on practical testing under identical conditions. It explores how subtle design refinements in the 843ST influence sound, response, articulation, and projection, while highlighting the consistent intonation and high performance shared by both instruments. Rather than identifying a superior model, the comparison frames the two instruments as closely related options within the Yamaha Custom range, allowing players to choose the setup that best aligns with their individual playing style, sound concept, and musical context.

Beyond the Notes: Exploring the Fundamentals fo Brass Playing for School-Aged Students.

Abstract: Beyond the Notes' looks at the fundamental exercises for school-aged brass players often overlooked in beginner and intermediate method books. Designed for both brass teachers and non-brass players who conduct brass players, this session is designed to supplement and enrich the conventional learning experience by covering aspects including long tones, lip flexibilities, mixed intervals, finger dexterity, and more in a setting accessible for brass students from the very first five notes learnt.

6 Tips to Ensure Progress Between Lessons.

Abstract: This article explores how meaningful musical progress happens between lessons, not during them. It emphasises the importance of goal-driven, regular, and focused practice, highlighting strategies such as structured goal setting, slow practice, scheduling, concentrated sessions, detailed score preparation, and practising away from the instrument. By practising smarter rather than longer, musicians can maximise progress and long-term development.

The emergence of Australian solo euphonium repertoire and lessons that can be used to expand Australian band repertoire.

Abstract: Twentieth-century Australian euphonium repertoire was limited and largely non-specific in intent. Since 2000, however, more than 60 new works by 33 Australian composers have been written specifically for the euphonium, reflecting a wide range of styles and significantly expanding the instrument’s technical and expressive possibilities. This paper examines the factors that led to this emergence, including the role of Australia’s band tradition and the euphonium’s historical identity as a band instrument, and considers what this growth reveals about developing new Australian repertoire for bands.
